I’ve spent my entire life learning and teaching Chinese martial arts.
I began training back in 1984, and I’m proud to be a disciple of Master Deng Jan Gong — one of the most famous Kung Fu masters in Southern China. I’m fluent in Cantonese, and I still return to China regularly to further my studies in Hap Kyun (Hop Gar), Taiji, and beyond.
In 1995 I opened the Rising Crane Centre, where for twenty-five years I taught Kung Fu full-time. I’m a graduate of the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine and served as technical director for traditional Kung Fu to the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts for seven years — so when I teach you the health and safety side of training, it comes from real, qualified experience.
Over those years I taught around the world — across Europe, Asia, America, and the Middle East — and coached nine national and international champions in Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and Mixed Martial Arts, with students winning competitions in the UK, Europe and Hong Kong.
I’m not just a traditionalist, either. From 2005 to 2015 I trained no-gi Brazilian Jiujitsu with six-times world champion Braulio Estima, and incorporated ground fighting into my self defence curriculum — a huge, often-missing piece of real self-defence. I’ve also studied MMA in America, Hawaii, and Thailand, because testing your skills against a fully resisting opponent is the best way to cut through the myths and keep what actually works.
Then, in 2020, after 25 years of running a full-time school, I closed the centre to take a sabbatical and travel to China for an extended study trip.
The universe, however, had other ideas — the outbreak of Covid-19 happened immediately after!
That’s when I realised my next move: teaching online. I spent lockdown building my online academy and teaching free lessons on YouTube to help people through the pandemic.
